# Beyond European Standards Award

Independent recognition of products with verified performance beyond relevant European standard requirements. Open worldwide. No IESQ application, assessment or licence fees.

## Recognition supported by evidence

The BEYOND EUROPEAN STANDARDS AWARD recognises a defined product model and configuration. IESQ examines complete test evidence against applicable European requirements and records the specific characteristics that exceed the relevant benchmark. All applicable mandatory requirements and required baseline checks must be satisfied. Compliance alone does not qualify a product for the Award.

The Award has one level. Decisions follow published evidence requirements; there are no scores, rankings, public votes or paid categories.

## Choose your next step

## What the Award establishes

An Award record identifies the product, the assessed configuration, the standards and editions used, and the particular results supporting recognition. The conclusion is confined to that evidence. It does not extend to an entire brand, unassessed variants or characteristics that were not examined.

IESQ administers the programme as a Swiss association, UID CHE-467.092.061. It is the issuer of this independent Award. The Award does not represent approval by the European Union, a standards organisation or a regulator, and does not replace statutory conformity assessment or market-access obligations.

[Institutional particulars](/legal-notice/) · [Assessment method](/award/methodology/)

## From application to public record

## A free programme with continuing obligations

IESQ charges no fees for eligibility enquiries, applications, evidence review, decisions, public registration, electronic certificates, mark licences, changes, renewal, complaints or appeals. Applicants arrange and pay for their own external testing, translation, notarisation or other certification services where required. IESQ does not appoint an exclusive laboratory or receive referral commission.

An Award is valid for one year. Holders report changes affecting the evidence and use the Award mark only within the current record's scope and validity.

# Apply for the Award

Submit a defined product and its evidence. IESQ application, review, certificate and mark-licence services are free.

## Start or continue an application

## Before you submit

Read the product schedule, assessment method and evidence requirements. Identify the exact model and configuration and the core characteristics claimed to exceed a European requirement. Your complete file must also establish the other required baseline checks.

Save the private access key when you create the case. It is shown once and allows you to return, upload material, answer questions and read formal notices. IESQ staff will not ask you to place this key in a public message.

[Product schedules](/award/categories/) · [Evidence checklist](/award/evidence/) · [Continue an existing case](/award/application/)

## Charges and use of information

IESQ does not charge for any stage of this Award, including changes, renewal and appeals. You arrange and pay for external testing, translation, notarisation and other certification where needed. There are no application payment details or invoices in this process.

Information is used to administer and examine the application. Before a record is issued, you approve the required public product information and evidence summary. Full technical reports are not automatically made public.

# Product categories

Find the product schedule, core evidence questions and related European standard references for your application.

## Find your product

## How to use a schedule

Each schedule defines a product boundary, core characteristics and evidence questions. It is read with the programme method. A characteristic is eligible for comparison only where a relevant European standard or European legal requirement supplies an applicable, comparable benchmark. A catalogue match, test-method title or desirable feature is not a benchmark by itself.

The applicant proposes the standards, editions, clauses and claimed margins. IESQ records the applicable baseline and core comparison before technical review. It considers the complete required evidence, including results that do not support the claim.

[Assessment method](/award/methodology/) · [Evidence requirements](/award/evidence/)

## Products crossing category boundaries

A connected appliance may combine appliance, radio and battery requirements; protective footwear may combine material and PPE requirements. Describe the complete product and its intended use. The assessment scope follows the functions and hazards, rather than the category with the easiest comparison.

The schedules are routes for evidence review, not a statement that every listed reference supplies an Award threshold or that every product in a group qualifies.

# Agriculture and forestry products and equipment

Product and machinery requirements shaped by field conditions, operators, materials and biological processes.

## Product boundary

Product and machinery requirements shaped by field conditions, operators, materials and biological processes.

Machine or product purpose, field conditions, operators and materials. Identify the submitted model, configuration, rated conditions and intended use, including functions crossing other product schedules. This is schedule BESA-S26, edition 1.0, read with BESA 1.0.

## Core comparisons

The following characteristics identify relevant lines of examination. A characteristic supports recognition only when an applicable European standard or European legal requirement supplies a comparable requirement and the submitted evidence establishes a margin under the programme method. They are not additional European limits.

- Noise or vibration.
- Mechanical endurance.
- Defined product performance.

Keep the equipment configuration and field or laboratory method explicit. Required safeguarding, environmental and other legal checks remain independent baseline conditions.

All other applicable mandatory requirements and baseline checks must be satisfied. At least one selected core comparison must qualify; no scoring or averaging offsets a failure.

## Fix the applicable references

Use the linked product-standard research to identify candidate references, then verify the applicable edition, amendments, clause and requirement against the controlled source. The index is a discovery aid and contains earlier editions; a search match alone does not establish applicability or a valid comparison.

[Standard references and evidence questions](/standards/products/agriculture-forestry/) · [Official European sources](/standards/sources/)

Record the legal baseline separately from a voluntary standard and identify any relevant Official Journal citation, restriction or transition. IESQ fixes the accepted scope and core characteristics before detailed technical examination.

## Product-specific evidence

Submit the technical specification and model matrix, complete reports and amendments, relevant laboratory scopes, the proposed comparison table and the legal documents required for the intended use. For each core claim, identify the report page, requirement, measured result, units, conditions and uncertainty or classification rule. Include adverse findings and retests.

- operating conditions
- machine and attachment boundary
- hazard and performance evidence
- material identification

An additional function may require another schedule and further evidence. Keep the tested specimen connected to the released production specification; declarations and photographs supplement but do not replace the test evidence.

## Decision and public scope

The reviewer records whether the required baseline is satisfied and which selected core comparisons, if any, establish a supported margin. A separate authorised person makes the decision. The public record names the particular characteristics, models, configurations, standard editions, validity and limits.

Recognition under this schedule is not approval of every characteristic or of an entire product family. A change affecting machine or product purpose, field conditions, operators and materials must be reported for a scope decision.

[Assessment method](/award/methodology/) · [Mark use](/award/mark-use/)

## Prepare your application

IESQ charges no application, examination, certificate, licence, renewal or change fee. Applicants arrange and pay for external testing, translation and other certification services. Recognition is valid for one year and is subject to the current public status.

## Product boundary

Safety, performance and the relationship between general and appliance-specific requirements.

Rated operation, supply conditions and appliance-specific hazards. Identify the submitted model, configuration, rated conditions and intended use, including functions crossing other product schedules. This is schedule BESA-S01, edition 1.0, read with BESA 1.0.

## Core comparisons

The following characteristics identify relevant lines of examination. A characteristic supports recognition only when an applicable European standard or European legal requirement supplies a comparable requirement and the submitted evidence establishes a margin under the programme method. They are not additional European limits.

- Energy demand.
- Temperature rise.
- Endurance under prescribed use.

Include the general and particular appliance requirements. A favourable energy result cannot offset an electrical, thermal or mechanical failure.

[Standard references and evidence questions](/standards/products/household-appliances/) · [Official European sources](/standards/sources/)

- product configuration
- component schedule
- normal and abnormal operating conditions
- instructions and production controls

An additional function may require another schedule and further evidence. Keep the tested specimen connected to the released production specification; declarations and photographs supplement but do not replace the test evidence.

## Decision and public scope

# Pressure equipment and fluid systems

Pressure boundaries, fluid characteristics and the interaction of vessels, piping and protective devices.

## Product boundary

Pressure boundaries, fluid characteristics and the interaction of vessels, piping and protective devices.

Pressure boundary, allowable conditions, fluid group and protective devices. Identify the submitted model, configuration, rated conditions and intended use, including functions crossing other product schedules. This is schedule BESA-S09, edition 1.0, read with BESA 1.0.

## Core comparisons

The following characteristics identify relevant lines of examination. A characteristic supports recognition only when an applicable European standard or European legal requirement supplies a comparable requirement and the submitted evidence establishes a margin under the programme method. They are not additional European limits.

- Leakage.
- Endurance under the prescribed pressure cycle.
- Material performance.

Compare the specified test cycle, material and pressure boundary. A greater test pressure is not permission to increase the allowable service pressure.

[Standard references and evidence questions](/standards/products/pressure-fluid/) · [Official European sources](/standards/sources/)

- pressure design basis
- material traceability
- joining procedures
- inspection and protective-device evidence

An additional function may require another schedule and further evidence. Keep the tested specimen connected to the released production specification; declarations and photographs supplement but do not replace the test evidence.

## Decision and public scope

The reviewer records whether the required baseline is satisfied and which selected core comparisons, if any, establish a supported margin. A separate authorised person makes the decision. The public record names the particular characteristics, models, configurations, standard editions, validity and limits.

Recognition under this schedule is not approval of every characteristic or of an entire product family. A change affecting pressure boundary, allowable conditions, fluid group and protective devices must be reported for a scope decision.

# Eligibility

Establish the applicant, product scope and evidence required before submitting a free Award application.

## Who may apply

Applications are accepted from brand owners, manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives worldwide. A representative must provide authority covering the application and use of the product information. An application identifies the responsible legal entity and a contact able to answer technical and ownership questions. Country, business size, sales volume and membership do not determine the outcome.

## The conditions for recognition

All applicable mandatory requirements and the baseline checks identified in the agreed assessment scope must be met. Complete evidence must cover the exact model, configuration and intended use. At least one relevant core characteristic, identified under the product schedule before technical assessment, must show a demonstrable margin beyond a comparable requirement in an applicable European standard or European legal limit.

A favourable result on one characteristic cannot compensate for an unresolved failure, missing baseline evidence or an adverse result elsewhere in the required scope. A test-method reference without a comparable requirement cannot by itself establish performance beyond a standard.

## Check your starting position

## Define the model and variants

Identify the model designation, technical configuration, intended users and uses, rated conditions and the production specification represented by the tested samples. Describe materials, critical components, firmware and accessories where they affect the result. A series application includes a variant matrix and a justified coverage argument for each variant. Similar names, a shared enclosure or a common brand are insufficient.

Only the variants expressly accepted and listed in the issued record are covered. Evidence of sample-to-production correspondence is required; a laboratory report describes the samples examined and does not automatically establish continuing production conformity.

## Matters preventing a favourable decision

Forged or altered evidence, concealed adverse findings, unauthorised representation, an unsupported model match or an attempt to purchase a favourable decision prevents an Award. An unresolved product safety issue, relevant recall or regulatory restriction requires investigation and may prevent assessment or lead to suspension. A past event is considered in relation to the affected product, corrective action and current risk; it is not treated as a finding against every product of a brand.

If the evidence establishes compliance but no qualifying margin, the application does not meet the Award conditions. The decision notice explains the result and the free appeal route.

## Select the product schedule

Use the product's function and intended purpose to select the schedule. A product may require more than one schedule. Medical, protective, pressure, transport and other regulated uses require their specific legal documents in addition to evidence supporting the Award.

[Product categories](/award/categories/) · [Evidence requirements](/award/evidence/) · [Start an application](/award/apply/)

# Evidence requirements

Prepare complete, verifiable reports and the records linking them to the product submitted for the Award.

## The submission file

Provide the product specification and photographs, a model and variant matrix where relevant, intended uses, applicant authority, applicable legal documents, complete test reports and the proposed core comparisons. Include the original report files and their appendices, amendments and relevant correspondence. Identify known adverse results, corrective action and retests. Selected pages, a certificate image or a marketing summary cannot replace the complete evidence.

## Check laboratory competence

For testing evidence, identify the actual laboratory and site, its accreditation body, certificate and scope. Check that the method, product or matrix, location and date of testing fall within the applicable accredited scope. An accreditation body's status, a laboratory's accreditation and a notified body's designation are different facts. A logo alone establishes none of them.

Use the national accreditation body's official directory through the EA MLA directory, or a relevant ILAC MRA signatory directory, and examine the actual testing scope. Acceptance under this Award does not create statutory acceptance under a particular EU law. Where a legally required notified-body procedure applies, verify the body and its designated tasks in NANDO and obtain the required legal output.

[EA official directories](https://european-accreditation.org/ea-members/directory-of-ea-members-and-mla-signatories/) · [ILAC signatory search](https://ilac.org/signatory-search/) · [Commission information on notified bodies](https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/single-market/goods/building-blocks/notified-bodies_en)

## Retain every relevant part of a report

The file includes the issuer, report number and version, all numbered pages, sample identity, receipt and test dates, methods, conditions, results, conclusions, deviations, limitations, subcontracting and authorisation. Map each statement relied on to a report page and requirement. Retests remain connected to the original findings and the corrective change.

Items outside the accredited scope and subcontracted work must be identified. The reviewer establishes the competence and evidence basis for those items; another site's or laboratory's accreditation cannot be borrowed.

## Verify authenticity and model coverage

IESQ may contact the issuing laboratory using contact details independently obtained from an official source. The applicant provides permission to verify the report and relevant scope information. Product photographs, labels, critical component lists and software versions connect the tested specimen to the submitted specification. Explain differences from the currently supplied product.

A report is not accepted or rejected solely because it is a particular age. Its continuing relevance depends on the product, methods, standard edition, changes, issuer restrictions and any applicable legal requirement. Unexplained differences require clarification or updated evidence.

## Language and document authenticity

English is the programme's working language and the language of decisions, public records and certificates. Supply original-language documents together with an English translation where needed for review. The translation must identify the report number, version, pages and translator, and preserve tables, qualifications and adverse findings. IESQ may seek clarification from a competent translator or the issuer.

Notarisation, legalisation or other certification is requested only when a specific authenticity or legal requirement justifies it. Applicants choose and pay for external translation and certification. A notarised copy does not establish technical competence or prove a margin beyond a standard.

## Upload and confidentiality

Upload complete PDF reports and supporting PNG, JPEG or AVIF images through the private application workspace. Each file may be up to 20 MB; the standard allowance is 30 files and 200 MB per case. Contact IESQ through the case if a necessary file exceeds those limits. Executables, archives and password-protected reports are not accepted through this route.

Access to the case requires its private access key or an authorised staff account. Public records contain the approved model information, scope, evidence summary and status. Full reports, personal contacts, confidential formulations and commercial records are not published by default.

# Award holders

Maintain the accuracy of your Award record and use the certificate and mark within their authorised scope.

## Your record and licence

The favourable decision identifies the model, configuration, accepted criteria and the particular characteristics supporting the Award. The electronic certificate and mark licence follow the same scope. Your private workspace contains notices and the case history; the public record is the verification source for current status.

Use the record's permanent URL and QR code in product communications. A PDF or image held locally can become out of date when the product or record changes.

[Open your case](/award/application/) · [Award Register](/award/register/)

## One-year validity and free renewal

The Award is valid for one year from issue, subject to continuing accuracy and any suspension or withdrawal. Apply for renewal from 60 days before the expiry date through the case workspace. Supply the current product declaration, changes since the last review, relevant new evidence and any updated legal or standard references.

Renewal does not automatically repeat every test. The review establishes which existing results remain applicable and what further evidence is necessary. A renewal decision carries its own issue and expiry dates. An application in progress does not preserve an expired licence. All IESQ renewal work is free.

## Report changes promptly

Notify IESQ before making an Award claim for a changed product. Relevant changes include design, material or formulation, critical components, software, ratings, intended use, manufacturing site or process, model coverage and the holder's legal identity. Also report a relevant recall, safety incident, regulatory action or adverse test finding without delay.

Upload a description of the change, the affected models, the date introduced and the evidence supporting continued coverage. IESQ may maintain, amend, suspend or withdraw the affected scope through a documented decision. A change request is free and is not itself approval of the revised product.

## Suspension, withdrawal and expiry

Suspension stops current mark use while a specified issue is resolved. Withdrawal ends the Award for the affected scope. Expiry ends validity at the date recorded unless a renewal decision has been issued. The holder must stop affected claims and downloads and update product pages, packaging and other communications as directed in the notice.

Possible grounds include false or concealed evidence, an unreported material change, unresolved safety information or persistent mark misuse. The notice states reasons, effective date, scope and the appeal route. Historical entries remain available with their current status.

## Keep records and communications consistent

Keep the assessed specification, production correspondence, reports, change decisions and current approved mark files accessible. Review references in distributor and retailer materials that you control. Do not provide an unrestricted mark file as permission for another model or brand.

# Use of the Award mark

Use the Award mark with its record reference, model scope and current validity.

## The authorised mark

## Permitted use

A current holder may use the supplied Award artwork for the models and configurations listed in an active record. Permitted contexts include the relevant product page, packaging and product literature, subject to the decision and licence. Keep the mark close to the identified product and provide the record reference and verification URL or QR code.

Use the supplied proportions and colours. Leave clear space equal to the height of the word AWARD on each side. The standard Award mark should be at least 40 mm wide in print or 180 CSS pixels wide on screen; the record reference must remain readable. Use an approved single-colour version only where production requires it. Do not add EU emblems, accreditation logos, notified-body numbers, extra stars or ranks.

## State the recognition accurately

An appropriate statement is: “Awarded the BEYOND EUROPEAN STANDARDS AWARD by IESQ for [model/configuration], for the characteristics identified in record [reference]. Valid until [expiry date], subject to current record status.” A shorter claim must still identify the model, record and limits.

Where a particular result is quoted, retain its conditions and the verified comparison. Do not convert a limited characteristic into a statement that the product exceeds every European requirement. Do not describe the Award as EU approval, statutory product certification, a CE certificate, a ranking, a purchase recommendation or an endorsement of the whole brand.

## Keep identity and permissions separate

The Institute's corporate logo is not a substitute for the Award mark or evidence of product recognition. Membership and other IESQ activities do not grant Award-mark rights. A holder may not license another party to use the mark for an unlisted product.

Electronic certificates and record extracts must be reproduced as complete documents. Do not remove scope limitations, alter dates, obscure a status notice or imply that an old document is current.

## Changes in status and misuse

Stop affected current claims when a record expires or is suspended or withdrawn. Follow any specific instructions on correcting online and printed materials. A stored artwork file does not preserve the right to use it. Approved licence files are available through the holder's authenticated case when the record is active.

# Assessment method

How IESQ establishes the applicable baseline and verifies a specific margin beyond European requirements.

## The decision sequence

The assessment identifies the product and required baseline, verifies the sources and model coverage, checks satisfaction of all applicable requirements within that scope, and examines the proposed core comparisons. Technical findings are reviewed before a separate authorised decision. The same sequence applies to direct applications, nominations and products identified through research.

The programme does not write or amend European standards. Its own published rules govern evidence, comparison and the conditions for this Award.

## Fix the baseline before reviewing the claim

Record each applicable legal framework and standard, its edition and amendments, the relevant clause, the requirement and the intended use. Distinguish a standard's publication status from citation in the Official Journal. A current catalogue entry is not proof of a current presumption of conformity. A withdrawn edition is not silently substituted for the relevant assessment basis.

Where a standard is used voluntarily, the file explains its suitability. Where legislation permits another conformity route, the legal baseline is assessed on that basis; a claim of exceeding a named standard still requires evidence against that named requirement. The Award is not a substitute for the manufacturer's legal responsibilities.

## Select relevant core characteristics

The product schedule identifies the characteristics that may support recognition. The scope records the selected core characteristics before detailed review and includes the other baseline checks needed for the product. IESQ records why the selected comparison matters for the product's safety, durability, performance or material characteristics. A cosmetic feature or an unrelated favourable test cannot be used to avoid a required characteristic.

All baseline checks must be satisfied; at least one selected core characteristic must demonstrate a verifiable margin. The published conclusion names that characteristic and its limits. It does not state that every characteristic is superior.

## Compare like with like

The reference requirement and measured result must use compatible methods, units, sample conditions, preparation, operating settings and statistical treatment. Identify whether a lower result, a higher result or a specified range is favourable. For a range, both boundaries remain relevant. Results obtained at a different temperature, loading, exposure or configuration need a documented equivalence argument; a convenient conversion is insufficient.

Ordinary pass/fail observations do not establish a numerical margin. Ordinal classes are not converted into percentages. When a permitted higher performance class is used, its applicable conditions and independently demonstrated classification must be stated explicitly.

## Account for uncertainty and reporting limits

Use the applicable standard's decision rule where it specifies one. Otherwise record a justified decision rule, uncertainty treatment and the risk of accepting an unsupported margin. For a simple quantitative comparison, this programme's default conservative screen places the relevant uncertainty bound on the favourable side of the reference limit: an upper-bound result must remain below an upper limit, or a lower-bound result above a lower limit. A different method needs a recorded technical justification.

A result reported as below a detection or quantification limit is an interval, not a measured zero. State the reporting limit and use only the conclusion it supports. Do not calculate a precise percentage improvement from an unknown value. Absence of an uncertainty figure is not replaced by an assumed zero.

[ILAC guidance on decision rules and measurement uncertainty](https://ilac.org/publications-and-resources/ilac-guidance-series/)

## A worked comparison

This illustration uses invented quantities and is not a product requirement. Suppose an applicable upper limit is 10 units. A result of 9.9 units with an expanded uncertainty of 0.3 units does not establish a margin under the default conservative screen, because the upper bound is 10.2. A result of 8.0 with an uncertainty of 0.3 has an upper bound of 8.3 and may support a margin if the method, relevance and remaining conditions are satisfied.

A technical finding still needs independent review and a decision. This arithmetic does not award the product or establish compliance with its other requirements.

## Record the finding and its limits

For each comparison, retain the standard and clause, source requirement, report and page, measured result, units, uncertainty or classification rule, conditions, calculation and conclusion. Explain any restriction, unresolved issue or exclusion. The decision identifies the accepted model and configuration, the baseline outcome and the particular evidence supporting recognition.

Approved public summaries reproduce only conclusions supported by the controlled assessment file. Confidential report contents remain restricted; the holder authorises the necessary public evidence summary.

# Nominate a product

Identify a product and the published evidence that may support an Award assessment.

## Submit a nomination

## What a nomination establishes

A nomination is a lead for investigation. Identify the product and exact model, the relevant standard or requirement, the claimed margin and the source of supporting information. Explain your relationship to the product, manufacturer, applicant or testing organisation. Do not upload confidential reports without authority.

IESQ may also identify candidate products through standards research. A nomination or research lead does not confer an Award or waive any condition. The responsible product party must establish authority, provide complete evidence and approve the required public information before an Award can be issued.

## The same conditions for every route

All candidate products follow the same product schedules, baseline requirements, evidence checks, technical review and independent decision. The nominator's reputation, commercial relationship or funding does not change the requirements. There is no nomination or referral payment.

# Application process

Follow an application from scope confirmation and evidence review to a written decision and a verifiable record.

## Four stages

## Receipt and completeness

Create an application, retain its reference and private access key, and submit the completed file. The immediate receipt records delivery only. IESQ aims to complete the initial scope and completeness review within five working days. The review identifies missing material and the applicable product schedule; it is not a favourable technical decision.

## Technical examination and clarification

Once the required file is complete, the target for technical examination and a decision is 20 working days. Complex scope, verification with a report issuer, specialist questions or further evidence may require longer; the case notice explains the reason and next review point. There is no paid priority route.

A clarification request lists the questions and normally allows 30 calendar days to respond. Preserve the originals, upload the revised material and explain how it relates to the previous version. The processing target pauses while required evidence is outstanding. An extension may be agreed before the deadline. A case may be closed after the deadline and a written reminder if the required response is not supplied.

## Independent decision

The technical reviewer records the baseline findings and each claimed margin. A different authorised person considers the complete record and makes the decision. Each person declares relevant interests and steps aside where an unresolved conflict exists. The decision function can request clarification or return the file for further review.

A favourable decision requires complete baseline findings and at least one supported core comparison. The written outcome states the accepted scope, evidence and reasons. A negative decision explains the unmet condition and how to request a free appeal.

## Registration and one-year validity

Following a favourable decision and approval of the public information, IESQ issues the electronic certificate and mark licence and publishes the Award record. The record is valid from the issue date until the corresponding date in the following year, with the expiry date exclusive; a 29 February issue reaches its first anniversary on 28 February in a non-leap year. The precise dates appear on the record.

Holders may submit renewal from 60 calendar days before expiry. Renewal is free and considers the continuing product specification, current baseline, report applicability and any required update. It does not automatically require repeating every test and does not extend validity until a renewal decision has been issued.

## Appeals and other concerns

An applicant or holder may appeal a decision within 30 calendar days of receiving it. Identify the decision, grounds and supporting material. A person not involved in the challenged technical review or decision handles the appeal. IESQ aims to acknowledge it within five working days and provide an outcome within 30 working days of a complete appeal file, or explain an extension. Appeals are free.

Service complaints, corrections to public information and reports of mark misuse use their corresponding routes. An appeal does not itself restore an expired, suspended or withdrawn Award.

## Checking a product

<details class="faq"><summary>How can I examine the basis of an Award?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>Open the public record and compare the model, configuration, recognised characteristics, standards, evidence summary, dates and current status. IESQ institutional particulars and the programme rules are linked from the Award pages.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Does the Award mean first in its class?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. There is one Award level, without ranking or comparative claims against products that were not examined.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>What does it establish about the product?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>The record identifies the assessed model and specific core characteristics with verified margins beyond the relevant European requirements, alongside satisfaction of the required baseline. Its limits remain part of the conclusion.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>How do I check a certificate?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>Use its permanent verification URL or QR code, or search the complete reference in the Award Register or the IESQ verification page. Match the model and configuration and read the current status.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Why might a familiar brand have no record?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>Participation and evidence differ. The absence of a record is not an assessment of every product sold by that brand. Recognition requires a completed favourable decision for the specific model.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Can recognition be bought?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. IESQ Award services are free. Financial support, advertising, membership, external testing expenditure or a commercial relationship creates no entitlement to an Award.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Is this a CE certificate or management-system certificate?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. It is an IESQ product Award with a stated evidence scope. It does not replace any legally required product conformity procedure, CE marking where applicable, registration or a management-system certificate.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Does it mean the product is suitable for every user?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. Read the intended use, instructions and scope. The Award is not a personal recommendation or an unrestricted guarantee of use.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Can an expired certificate still be used as current?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. The public record shows current validity and status. A historic document does not preserve an expired, suspended or withdrawn mark licence.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Who performs the testing?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>The applicant supplies reports from appropriately competent external testing organisations. IESQ examines the evidence and makes the Award decision; it does not represent itself as the laboratory that performed those tests.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>Does every application receive an Award?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>No. Missing evidence, unmet baseline requirements or absence of a supported margin prevents a favourable decision. Participation figures or success rates are published only from verified programme records.</p></div></details>

<details class="faq"><summary>How do I report an incorrect claim?</summary><div class="faq-body"><p>Use the mark-misuse or complaint route, identify the exact claim and its location, and include the record reference where available. A correction request can also be raised through the record enquiry route; all are free.</p></div></details>

# Award Register

Check the model, scope, evidence summary, validity and current status of an IESQ Award record. Public access is free and requires no account.

## Search Award records

## Read the complete record

Compare the exact model and configuration with the product concerned. Read the recognised characteristics, the standard editions and the limits of the evidence. Check the issue and expiry dates and current status. A matching brand or similar model name is insufficient.

An active record supports use of the Award only within its stated scope. A suspended, expired or withdrawn record remains identifiable but does not provide a current mark licence. A historic certificate cannot override the current status.

## If a reference cannot be matched

Check the complete identifier printed on the certificate or mark and try the verification link or QR code. A missing search match does not establish that a document is genuine or false. Send the document or the exact claim to IESQ for examination.

# Programme rules

BESA 1.0. Rules for free, evidence-based product recognition, effective 19 October 2026.

## Owner and application of these rules

The Institute of European Standards and Quality (IESQ), a Swiss association with UID CHE-467.092.061, owns and administers the BEYOND EUROPEAN STANDARDS AWARD. These rules, the assessment method and applicable product schedule form the programme conditions. They apply to direct applications, nominations and research-led cases. English is the controlling programme language.

The Award is issued by IESQ in its own capacity. Registration as an association does not constitute EU designation, accreditation or recognition of this Award by a regulator. Applicable legal rights and mandatory product obligations remain in force.

## Product scope and conditions

Recognition is limited to the exact model, configuration and intended use listed in the issued record. The applicant establishes authority and supplies accurate, complete evidence. All applicable mandatory requirements and the baseline checks fixed for the assessment must be satisfied. At least one relevant core characteristic, selected under the published schedule before technical review, must show a demonstrable margin against an applicable European requirement. Compliance alone does not qualify.

There is one Award level, without scores, ranking or votes. IESQ does not alter European standard limits. It determines the evidence and decision arrangements for this Award and publishes the method used.

## Evidence and applicant obligations

Supply complete reports, scope and competence information, model correspondence, legal documents where applicable and adverse findings relevant to the assessment. Permit independent checks with the issuer. Declare representatives and relevant commercial relationships. Respond to clarification requests, retain prior versions and identify changes. The applicant is responsible for rights to submit documents and authorise the public information.

An upload or receipt is not acceptance of the evidence. IESQ may decline or close a case where authenticity, competence, authority or scope cannot be established, and will state the reason. Deliberate falsification or a concealed material failure prevents a favourable decision.

## Review, impartiality and decision

The technical reviewer and the person making the final decision must be different authorised individuals. Their competence and appointment must cover the work. They declare relationships involving ownership, employment, consultancy, agency, personal interests or other relevant benefits. An unresolved conflict prevents participation. An appeal is handled by a person not involved in the challenged review or decision.

Persons involved may not accept gifts, benefits or remuneration contingent on a favourable outcome. Commercial staff, applicants, sponsors and members cannot override technical findings. The file retains findings, questions, reasons, declarations and the identity and authority of each decision-maker.

## Free programme and external services

IESQ charges no fees for scope and eligibility enquiries, nomination, application, evidence examination, clarification, technical review, decisions, public registration, electronic certificates, mark licensing, corrections, changes, renewal, complaints or appeals. There is no paid priority service, membership condition, paid Award tier or compulsory promotional purchase.

Applicants choose and pay for external testing, translation, notarisation, legalisation and certification services where necessary. IESQ does not designate an exclusive laboratory, require a particular agent or receive referral commission. External expenditure does not create a right to recognition. Donations, sponsorship, procurement and other financial support confer no assessment or decision rights. Any programme funding or relevant support is recorded with its interests and conditions; a source is described publicly only where factually established.

## Timing, notices and appeal

Receipt is recorded on submission. The initial completeness target is five working days; the technical review and decision target is 20 working days after the file is complete. Targets are not a promise of a favourable decision. A longer examination is explained in the case notice. Required clarification normally allows 30 calendar days; a documented extension may be requested. Working days exclude weekends and public holidays at the programme's Swiss place of administration.

Formal notices are retained in the private workspace. Applicants monitor their cases and keep contact details current. Notification dates, the basis for any closure and deadlines are recorded. A free appeal may be submitted within 30 calendar days after receipt of a decision. Acknowledgement is targeted within five working days and an outcome within 30 working days of a complete appeal file, with reasons for any extension. Service complaints and mark reports follow their dedicated routes.

## Issue, validity and renewal

A favourable decision is followed by approval of the public information, registration, an electronic certificate and a mark licence. The validity period is one year from the issue date, with the stated anniversary expiry date exclusive. A leap-day issue reaches its anniversary on 28 February where the next year has no 29 February. The current record governs status.

Renewal may be requested from 60 calendar days before expiry. It examines continued model correspondence, current criteria, changes and existing report applicability and identifies additional evidence where needed. Renewal is free. No automatic extension applies while an application or appeal is pending.

## Change, suspension and withdrawal

Holders promptly report changes to the product, critical materials and components, software, production, intended use, legal identity and other facts affecting the conclusion. They report relevant safety incidents, recalls, restrictions and adverse evidence without delay. IESQ examines the effect on the accepted scope and may maintain, amend, suspend or withdraw it with recorded reasons.

Suspension or withdrawal may also follow fraud, concealed information, an unresolved significant risk or persistent misuse. An urgent protective suspension can take effect while information is examined; the holder receives the reasons and an opportunity to respond. Expiry is distinct from withdrawal. Historic records and status changes remain identifiable. The holder stops or corrects affected claims as required.

## Information, confidentiality and retention

The case file is used for eligibility, evidence examination, decisions, record maintenance, complaints and appeals. Access is restricted by role and case credentials. Public information is limited to the authorised holder and product identity, accepted scope, evidence summary, dates, status and record history. Full reports, private contact details and confidential commercial information are not public by default and are not sold. Information may be shared with an issuer for verification, an authorised reviewer for the case or an authority where required, using the relevant safeguards.

Unsubmitted drafts are retained for 90 days after their last update. Closed applications without an Award are retained for two years for questions and appeals. Award evidence, decisions and associated correspondence are retained for six years after expiry or withdrawal, unless a documented legal hold or necessary extension applies. Public verification history is retained to identify issued records and their status; personal details are minimised. Applicants can raise access or correction requests through the privacy contact. The workspace access key is a confidential credential; loss is handled through a documented identity and authority check.

[Privacy notice](/privacy/) · [Privacy enquiry](/enquiries/?type=privacy&reference=BESA)

## Claims, limitations and responsibility

Use the mark only under the current record and mark rules. The Award identifies conclusions about the assessed evidence and product scope. It is not a blanket guarantee, product ranking, personal recommendation, factory management-system certificate or replacement for required registration, conformity assessment, CE marking where applicable, or market access. It does not remove the responsibilities of a manufacturer, importer, distributor or holder.

The meaning and limits of each finding remain with it. These programme conditions do not exclude non-excludable legal obligations or consumer rights. Questions about service conduct, a decision or misleading use follow their corresponding procedures.

## Standards changes and rule revisions

Each decision retains the edition and rule version on which it was made. IESQ reviews changes to legal requirements, cited editions and technical evidence for their effect on current recognition. The holder is informed of required updates and any transition date; a significant safety issue may require earlier action. A standard's publication or withdrawal alone is not silently converted into an unrecorded decision on a holder's Award.

Material programme revisions have a version, publication date, effective date and transition conditions. Routine clarification does not alter an existing scope without a documented decision.
