The Institute

IESQ concerns the practical use of standards and the quality of the evidence on which technical decisions are based. Its work is organised around defined subjects, methods and outputs rather than a general claim of approval.

Purpose and audience

The Institute's purpose is to support sound practice in product quality, standards application and technical evaluation. The audience includes manufacturers, purchasers, suppliers, laboratory professionals, researchers and those responsible for quality within organisations.

Scope of work

The remit covers technical guidance, quality methods, scoped assessment, research and professional learning. The terms of each activity identify its subject and intended result. Work that requires a particular statutory role or competence must be identified as such in its own documentation.

Governance and technical responsibility

Institutional decisions, technical review and operational delivery have distinct responsibilities. Governance information explains who has authority to approve work and oversee its conduct. Technical responsibilities are defined for the relevant programme or document.

Working approach

Technical work begins with a clear scope and an appropriate basis for evaluation. Evidence is considered against that basis, findings are recorded and conclusions state their limits. The same discipline applies to the preparation and review of guidance.
