Laboratory quality in context
The value of a measurement depends on its suitability for the intended decision. Laboratory quality work considers the method, sample, records and controls that support a reported result, together with the limitations affecting its interpretation.
Scope of technical support
Technical work may address the application of quality requirements, the organisation of records or the interpretation of measurement evidence. The agreed scope identifies the laboratory activity and intended output. It does not, by itself, confer accreditation.
Methods, controls and evidence
Relevant subjects include method suitability, handling of samples, quality control, traceability, uncertainty and reporting. The weight given to each subject depends on the measurement purpose and technical field. A generic quality checklist cannot replace that technical context.
Ways of working
A scoped assignment may involve review of procedures, discussion of evidence or a learning activity. Required expertise and access to records are established in advance. Any testing or calibration is identified as a separate activity with its actual provider.
Outputs
A technical report or learning activity states what has been examined or taught. Recommendations identify the issue and basis for action. They are not a laboratory accreditation decision, and should not be represented as such.
Testing and accreditation
Testing, calibration and accreditation are distinct from general quality support. A statement that a laboratory is accredited must refer to its responsible accreditation body and the specific activities within the applicable scope.
Guidance and learning
Use publications for method explanations and courses for defined learning outcomes. Check the technical field, intended audience and prerequisites before selecting a resource.
Discuss a laboratory question
Describe the measurement or laboratory task, the decision it supports and the issue encountered. Include relevant method references and the type of support sought, without sending confidential raw data at the initial stage.
