About the catalogue
The catalogue is organised around the document a reader needs to identify and use. Publication type, scope and edition distinguish explanatory guidance, research findings, technical methods and institutional positions.
Search and filter
Search by title, subject or document reference. Filters narrow the catalogue by document type, topic and status. Where an older edition is relevant to earlier work, use its own record rather than treating it as the current text.
Publication records
Each record leads to the document's abstract, intended audience and access arrangements. Its reference and edition identify the exact text. A reference to an external standard is distinguished from an Institute publication.
References and dates
Document reference, edition, publication date and revision date serve different purposes. Use the full reference when requesting clarification or citing a passage. A website update does not necessarily mean that the underlying document has been revised.
Current and superseded editions
A replacement edition is linked to the earlier document. Readers should consider whether a change affects their intended use. A superseded document can explain an earlier decision without establishing the basis for new work.
Access and rights
The record states whether material can be read or downloaded, or is accessed through the publisher. Terms of use apply to reproduction and distribution. Open access does not transfer copyright in cited external standards.
Read in context
Use the full document, including its scope, definitions and limitations. Related work and references help establish the context; they do not extend the conclusion beyond what the document addresses.
