Research context

EN 149:2001+A1:2009 concerns particle-filtering half masks and addresses requirements, testing and marking. The DIN catalogue identifies the European reference through DIN EN 149:2009-08 and lists the national adoption as current. Its ICS classification is 13.340.30. Official DIN record

The standard reference describes an assessment basis. It does not identify the tested product, establish the scope of a certificate or prove that every article supplied under a similar name has the same construction.

Start with the complete device

Record the model, design, size variants, layers, materials, harness, adjustment features and valve where present. Reconcile those details with the drawings, photographs, specimen description and supplied instructions.

A result for filter material is one type of evidence. A result for a complete device can address different questions. The technical file should explain which object was evaluated and which conclusion follows from it.

Keep the protection claim precise

A particle-filtering claim should not become a general statement about every respiratory hazard. The intended environment and the manufacturer's information remain essential to the interpretation of the product.

Similarly, a product classification does not establish suitability for every wearer or task. Selection and use need their own assessment of the actual conditions. The Commission's PPE guidelines distinguish the product framework from workplace-use considerations. PPE guidelines

Reconcile the document set

Document Evidence question
Product specification Does it describe the construction supplied?
Test report Are the specimen, method, conditions and results identifiable?
Assessment document Do its model, holder, annexes and conditions match the product?
Production records Is the relevant manufacturing arrangement connected to the assessed design?
Declaration and instructions Are identity and protection claims consistent with the evidence?

Where a formal third party is involved, verify the issuer and its scope independently through official information. A logo or body number in an image is insufficient for that purpose.

Review material and design changes

A revised filtering medium, harness, valve or manufacturing method can affect the relationship to earlier evidence. Record what changed, which conclusions rely on the original arrangement and what supports the decision to retain or supplement the evidence.

For a product family, explain size and construction coverage. A shared trade name should not obscure differences that matter to the evaluated device.

Keep the legal reference current

EN 149:2001+A1:2009 is included in the PPE reference decision published in June 2026. The Commission identifies Decision (EU) 2026/1279 and its subsequent amendment as the current decision chain on its PPE standard page.
