Start with the claim
Sustainability and traceability questions require a precise object. Identify the material, product, activity or statement concerned and the period to which it relates. Broad descriptions such as sustainable or responsible need a defined basis before they can be evaluated.
Evidence through the chain
Traceability concerns the relationship between information and its source through defined stages. Material identity, transactions, process records and changes of ownership or composition may be relevant. The chain should support the particular claim, rather than an assumed wider conclusion.
Methods and references
The method identifies applicable definitions, boundaries and data requirements. Different accounting, chain-of-custody or measurement approaches can support different conclusions. Their names should not be used interchangeably or without explaining the relevant model.
Technical work
Work may concern the structure of evidence, data quality, interpretation of requirements or a scoped technical review. Any formal validation or verification activity requires its own applicable programme, responsible body and result conditions.
Conclusions and limitations
A conclusion should identify the claim examined, the evidence period and any material assumptions. A finding about traceability does not establish every environmental characteristic of a product. An environmental information review is not general approval of an organisation's sustainability.
Guidance and tools
Guidance can help users define boundaries, identify records and recognise gaps in a claim's supporting evidence. Its use remains separate from any formal assessment decision.
Professional learning
Learning activities address the practical tasks of working with requirements and evidence. Course information distinguishes understanding a method from holding a qualification to conduct regulated or accredited verification.
Discuss evidence requirements
Provide the exact claim, intended audience, relevant period and available sources. State whether the need concerns technical guidance, an internal review or a result under a specified programme.
