Purpose of research
Research addresses questions for which existing methods or evidence leave a practical uncertainty. The work should identify who needs the answer, how the question will be investigated and the limits of the conclusion that the method can support.
Research subjects
Subjects arise from standards application, product and supplier quality, measurement evidence, traceability and professional practice. A theme identifies an area of interest; a project requires its own defined scope and resources.
Project records
A project record identifies its question, method, responsible parties and status. Planned outputs are distinguished from completed and approved results. The record links to material authorised for public release.
Method and review
The method explains the selection and treatment of evidence. Assumptions, uncertainty and relevant limitations are considered alongside findings. Technical review addresses whether the conclusion follows from the work actually performed.
Cooperation and support
Research relationships identify the contributions and responsibilities of each party. Funding and relevant interests are disclosed with the context needed to understand them. Cooperation does not transfer an organisation's statutory powers or accreditation scope.
Outputs
Research outputs may include reports, methods, data descriptions or proposals for further work. Publication depends on review, rights and agreed confidentiality. A report should distinguish observed findings from recommendations and future questions.
Discuss a research question
Describe the uncertainty, intended users, evidence already available and potential contribution of each party. Identify funding, timing and publication requirements.
