Research context
ISO 12100 provides general principles for machinery design, risk assessment and risk reduction. Its scope includes identifying hazards over relevant lifecycle phases and documenting the resulting process. The European adoption is EN ISO 12100:2010. ISO publication record · European adoption record
Its value is methodological. A reference in a technical file is useful only when the file explains the machine limits, the assessment reasoning and the measures selected. A generic score sheet without those connections is difficult to verify or maintain.
Define limits in operational terms
Describe the machine's tasks, modes, intended users and operating environment. Include intervention as well as normal production. Identify the boundaries with tooling, utilities, material handling and other machinery.
The practical test of this description is whether another engineer can identify what has been included. “Industrial machine used by trained operators” is too broad to establish which setting, cleaning or fault-recovery tasks were examined.
Make each entry carry a decision
| Register field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Task and machine state | Establish the circumstances in which exposure occurs |
| Person and exposure | Identify who may encounter the hazard and how |
| Hazardous situation | Explain the causal path to harm |
| Design response | Record the measure and why it was selected |
| Requirement and evidence | Connect the measure to a checkable technical basis |
| Remaining conditions | Identify assumptions and information that remain relevant |
| Revision | Preserve the relation to the released design |
This structure is an IESQ evidence-management method. It is intended to make the reasoning inspectable without reproducing the standard's text or imposing a particular proprietary scoring system.
Connect general principles with detailed standards
The general method can identify a need for a protective measure while a more detailed standard provides the technical basis for that measure. A machine-specific standard may address hazards and arrangements particular to the machine type.
Keep a standards-use matrix stating which issue each document addresses and where it leaves a gap. An interface between two machines may need its own reasoning even when each individual machine has a relevant product standard.
Verify the selected measure
A verification record should identify a design requirement, configuration, method and result. It should also show how failures or changes were resolved. If the measure relies on control-system behaviour, its functional specification and validation need to agree with the risk record.
Information for use should remain consistent with the design. It should not carry a safety assumption that the machine's actual construction or operating sequence contradicts.
Treat revision work as a different event from publication
At the research date, ISO lists the 2010 edition as published and records confirmation in 2022, alongside a revision project. That project does not replace the published document. The publication history, the European adoption and an EU legal citation are separate records.
A later edition requires a specific comparison before existing evidence is relabelled. The comparison should identify the changed issue, the affected machine feature and the resulting action.
