Purpose
The Institute's remit is the application of standards and quality practice to products, processes and technical evidence. Its purpose is to improve the basis on which requirements are understood, work is evaluated and results are communicated.
Subjects and users
Work is directed to defined quality and technical questions. The intended users include organisations making or purchasing products, those managing supply chains and the professionals responsible for specifications, assessment, measurement and technical documentation. Geographic applicability is stated for the particular work.
Principal functions
The work encompasses technical guidance, product and supplier quality methods, research, professional exchange and learning. Assessment activities are described by their actual object and method, with the responsible delivery and issuing bodies identified in the applicable arrangements.
Types of output
Outputs may include guidance, technical reports, research findings, assessment reports and learning records. These documents serve different purposes. A conclusion about one characteristic, activity or learning outcome must not be represented as approval of an entire product, organisation or professional practice.
Relationship to the standards system
European and international standards retain the identity, status and rights of their publishers. An IESQ explanation or reference to a standard does not establish authorship, endorsement or an institutional relationship with that publisher. Contributions to external work must be described through the actual participation route.
Limits of the remit
A technical report is not a statutory authorisation. Membership is not certification. A learning record is not evidence of product conformity. Any claim of accreditation, notification or legal authority requires an identified body and an applicable, verifiable scope.
Questions about scope
Describe the product, process, evidence or professional task concerned, the intended use of the work and any requirements already identified. That information provides the basis for determining whether the question falls within an appropriate activity.
