Research context

Part 1 supplies the general basis within a family of household-appliance safety standards. Its practical use depends on the relevant appliance-specific Part 2 and the applicable edition relationship. A report referring only to “60335” leaves the assessment basis unclear.

The BSI catalogue identifies the European documents EN IEC 60335-1:2023 and A11:2023 through its national adoption. The IEC catalogue separately identifies IEC 60335-1:2020 and explains the need for compatible appliance-specific parts. International and European references should remain distinguishable in the technical file. European record · International record

The main application decision

Start with the appliance's function and intended conditions. Then identify the product-specific text and check how it supplements or modifies the general text. Record the complete document set, including amendments and relevant corrections.

The coverage argument should explain why that set describes the product. It should also identify functions or applications that require another line of assessment. A rechargeable supply, a commercial setting or a connected function should be examined on its actual characteristics, rather than handled through assumptions about the word “household”.

Three relationships to maintain

Relationship Practical record
General requirements to appliance-specific requirements The selected Part 1, Part 2 and their compatible editions
International text to European adoption The exact EN reference and European amendments used
Technical publication to legal citation The applicable law, official citation, conditions and dates

These relationships answer different questions. A new international publication does not by itself establish a new European citation. Equally, a publication-status label does not describe the configuration tested by a laboratory.

What a useful evidence review asks

First, can the report's specimen be reconciled with the released design? Compare model identifiers, supply arrangements, relevant components, materials, accessories and control versions.

Second, can its operating conditions be reconstructed? The record should identify the settings and configurations used and explain the representative selection. A report that lists results without enough configuration information is harder to extend across a product family.

Third, are conditions attached to components or protective functions reflected in the finished design? A component result supports the application only within a justified relationship to its ratings and use conditions.

Finally, are the instructions consistent with the evaluated arrangement? If safe use depends on installation, accessories or operating restrictions, those assumptions need to appear in the supplied information.

An edition comparison needs the texts

A comparison between the earlier EN 60335-1 family and EN IEC 60335-1:2023 should identify changes by technical subject, affected construction and consequence for evidence. Merely changing the reference on a report or declaration does not establish that the revised requirements have been addressed.

A useful comparison table contains the old basis, new basis, product feature affected, existing evidence, gap and action. The action may be a design review, additional evaluation or a justified conclusion that existing evidence remains relevant. Its scope follows the actual difference.
