Types of learning record

A learning record identifies the activity and the basis on which it is issued. The type must be read before any claim is made about it. A document carrying the word certificate is not necessarily a professional certification.

Attendance and completion

An attendance record concerns participation under the activity's conditions. A completion record concerns satisfaction of specified course requirements. Those requirements may include learning activities, but should not be assumed to demonstrate independent professional competence.

Assessed outcomes

Where an assessment forms part of a course, the course information identifies the method and conditions. The result concerns that assessment and its scope. It does not imply competence for tasks outside it or continuing personnel certification.

Issuer and record information

The record identifies the participant, activity, issuing body and relevant date, together with its type and reference. Personal information made available in a public check is limited to the authorised purpose and applicable arrangements.

Using a learning record

Describe the activity and result accurately. Do not use a course record to suggest that a product, management system or employer is certified. Any period, renewal condition or limitation comes from the applicable record rules.

Verification and correction

Use a record's stated verification route where available. Check the identifier and issuer. A correction request should identify the record and the disputed information; personal details may require verification before a change is made.
